Sky Angel, established over 30 years ago, was America’s first Christian satellite television company. In 1980 Sky Angel’s founder, Robert W. Johnson, felt the need for a Christian-owned and controlled multi-channel television service capable of bypassing the “secular electronic media gatekeepers.” At that time Johnson had read an article about an emerging technology called high-power direct broadcast satellite. A true visionary and pioneer, Johnson was part of the initial round of high-power DBS license applicants in 1981, establishing the first Christian television and radio platform.
The Christian TV service was launched December 10, 1996 after many years of trials and disappointments. It started with only six Christian television networks and three radio networks. Sky Angel’s satellite service eventually expanded to 36 Christian TV and radio channels.
Due to satellite failure in 2006, a significant number of Christian satellite channels were at risk. In order for the company to move forward, Sky Angel made the decision to transition to a newly emerging delivery technology called IPTV, or Internet Protocol Television - a flexible, digital format that allows Sky Angel to deliver its Christian television networks directly to viewers’ televisions through a simple high-speed Internet connection and receiver.
Having the ability to deliver the Christian TV service through the Internet is helping Sky Angel reach more people and be more diverse and more powerful than satellite TV. It gives viewers more choices, more convenience and more control over the programs they allow into their home. In addition, Sky Angel features a 48-Hour Playback option on the Christian faith TV channels, as well as an ever-growing Faith and Family On Demand library. Sky Angel IPTV eliminates the need for an outside dish or antenna (that’s required for satellite TV), professional installation or even a computer. BR />
